A raccoon that attacked two people and chased a group of children in Maywood is being tested for rabies after being captured by animal control.
The incidents began Thursday around 1:25 p.m. at the 700 block of Palmer Avenue.
According to police, 82-year-old Roy DeMaio says he was home just laying out and enjoying the sun when suddenly the raccoon attacked him. His arms and legs were injured.
"That sucker was still on my side so he came through this way over here and I’m trying, then took off across the street,” says DeMaio.
About 30 minutes later, police say the animal chased the children and adult at the 700 block of Oak Avenue, the went over a fence and left.
Then 10 minutes later, the animal attacked a 72-year-old man doing yard work from behind. He suffered injuries to his lower back.
Police eventually found the animal and used a Taser twice, but the raccoon shook it off and ran away.
Police found the animal again and it lunged at officers who shot at it three times, but missed.
Police don’t believe the animal was actually hit with a bullet.
Ultimately, animal control captured and euthanized the racoon, which will be tested for rabies.
They hope to have the results Wednesday
