Cops all over New Jersey are targeting underage drinkers as part of the "Cops in Shops" program.
Fairlawn is one of about three dozen police departments throughout the state participating in the program. Police place undercover officers inside liquor stores to catch those under 21 who try to buy alcohol.
Sgt. Derek Bastinck says Fairlawn police make arrests every weekend for underage drinking. Officers are also targeting adults who buy booze for minors.
If someone is caught trying to purchase alcohol and is underage, it is a mandatory loss of license for six months and they can be fined over $500.
The program started 10 years ago. Since then more than 6,000 underage drinkers and adults who buy alcohol for minors have been arrested.
