A call to the Middletown Police Department reporting the discovery of a possible hand grenade led to a large police response Sunday morning.
At approximately 10:53 a.m., a caller contacted police to report that "an object of concern" was discovered in a home, according to Middletown Deputy Chief Paul Bailey. The caller told police the object could possibly have been a hand grenade. Bailey did not know exactly where the object was located inside the residence.
After receiving the call, local police responded along with a team from the New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad. Baily said the bomb squad was unable to determine if the object posed a threat, so they removed it from the home.
After determining that there was no threat, all units from local and state police were released from the scene. Bailey said it's important for residents to report anything they find that could potentially be dangerous.
"Middletown Police Department encourages anyone in a situation where they find an unusual object that could pose a threat or risk to public safety to immediately call police," Bailey said.
Police have not said if the object was, in fact, a grenade.
