United Airlines is testing a new service at Newark Liberty International Airport that lets some travelers order food, drinks and other items through the airline's app and have them waiting for pickup at their gate.

The pilot is available on select flights departing from or connecting through up to nine designated gates between C125 and C138 in Terminal C.

Eligible travelers receive a push notification through the United app or an email before departure allowing them to order items including sandwiches, salads, drinks, kids meals, snacks and candy. Travel essentials such as select over-the-counter medications, travel pillows and charging cords are also available.

Orders are placed on a designated pickup shelf at the gate, where travelers can retrieve them before boarding.

United is working with airport hospitality company OTG to prepare and deliver food from participating restaurants, including Nonna's Kitchen and Victory Grill.

United said it plans to expand the pilot to Houston later this year and will collect customer feedback before determining whether to bring the service to other airports.
