Rutgers fans left SHI Stadium stunned Thursday night after the Scarlet Knights suffered a shocking season-opening loss against U Mass Amherst.

The defeat came as a major disappointment for a fan base that entered the year with high expectations.

"With all the hype coming into this season, this was a big letdown," one fan told News 12 after the game.

"They were favored by a lot," said another fan. "They didn't earn it. They don't deserve it, and they played terrible."

Before kickoff, the mood was much different. Fans packed parking lots around SHI Stadium for the home opener, continuing traditions that for many stretch back decades. Alumni, former players and longtime supporters gathered for tailgates, reunions and pregame celebrations.

"We relive our college days," said one alumnus.

Others said Rutgers football is as much about seeing friends and family as it is the game itself.

"It means I get together with my friends again. I don't get to see guys I don't see all year," said one fan.

Many supporters expressed confidence that Rutgers would open the season with a victory.

"We're gonna win today for sure," said one fan said before kickoff.

However, as the game slipped away, frustration quickly replaced optimism. For some longtime supporters, the loss raised questions about their future commitment to the program.

"My family has had season tickets for well over 20 years," one fan said. "I'm pretty sure this will be the last season we buy those tickets."

The final score was 37-21 in favor of Amherst. Rutgers will play their next game on Sept. 11.
