Police officer holds fundraiser to build statue honoring World War II vet
A Wall Township police officer is trying to raise funds to erect a statue of a World War II veteran from New Jersey.
Harry Rockafeller was a major general who served directly under General George S. Patton during the war.
Rockafeller lived in Wall Township and befriended Officer Michael Malone. Malone says that he now wants to raise $130,000 and to have a statue of Rockafeller erected outside of the Wall Police Headquarters.
“We have to remember the greatest generation and unfortunately we're at a point where…the greatest generation is passing away,” Malone says.
Rockafeller was 100 years old when he died. During his career he was recommended three times for the Distinguished Service Cross Medal. He also received three Silver Stars, as well as a Purple Heart.
