One person is dead and six more injured after a fire on Boyd Avenue in Jersey City.
Fire crews got the call at 4:50 p.m. and were on scene within four minutes. When they made it deeper into the main building, they found a victim dead on arrival - the Jersey City fire chief says it was an older woman.
The other injuries were said to be minor burns to three citizens and minor injuries to three firefighters.
"The neighbor was told me that he was hearing screams from a lady up on the second floor, but the flames were too bad for him to run up to the steps," said neighbor Joey Rohena.
The chief said there were factors inside that made fighting the fire difficult.
"The entire second floor - three rooms - were fully 5 feet high of debris and I guess stuff that they were storing in the apartment," said Chief Jack Johnson. "It was hard just to get through the apartment."
Boyd Avenue is full of connected row homes. The chief said six households are displaced, three of them uninhabitable.
“It was shocking because my daughters were like, ‘You know, Daddy, why is there so much smoke?'" said Rohena.
