A 57-year-old man surrendered to police Thursday morning following negotiations after officers responded to reports of shots fired at a Kearny residence, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to Webster Avenue, north of West Bennett Avenue, around 9:15 a.m. after a 911 caller reported gunfire, according to the Kearny Police Department. Another gunshot was heard as officers took positions near the residence.

Police secured the area, established a perimeter and began negotiations with the suspect, identified as Thomas J. Romano, 57, of Kearny.

Romano, who police said was the subject of an unrelated arrest warrant, surrendered after negotiations. No one was injured.

As of the department’s late-morning update, the perimeter remained in place and the investigation was ongoing.

Police said there was no active shooter or threat to the general public but advised residents to avoid Webster Avenue near West Bennett Avenue until the incident concluded.

The Hudson County Regional SWAT Team was among the agencies that assisted with the response.
