Two dogs were attacked in two different incidents in Union County by what officials believe was a rabid fox Monday night. Neither dog was injured, but officials are urging caution with pets.
Summit police killed a fox in the area around Mountain Avenue and Tulip Street that will be taken by Animal Control to be tested for rabies. They believe it is the fox that was involved in the recent attacks.
Until test results are available, police are urging residents to continue to exercise caution when walking outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn. Children and small pets should continue to be supervised when outdoors.
Police say both small and big dogs are in danger from coyote attacks. Smaller dogs under 40 pounds are seen as prey while bigger dogs are seen as a threat.
Here are some helpful tips to keep you and your pet safe
- Do not leave dogs outside unattended, especially after dark.
- If you come across a coyote, make loud noises by yelling and waving your arms to scare them off.
- Keep food and trash secure to keep coyotes away from your home.
- If you or your dog are attacked, call the police.
