Police say even though violent crimes are down, non-violent crimes, such as burglary and larceny, are on the rise in Montclair.

Investigators say in the most recent burglary, someone stole $800 worth of plumbing from a building that was under renovation. The building is owned by the Baptist church next door. The home?s resident, a woman who has lived there for 42 years, was away on vacation when the incident occurred.

In another incident, a shop owner on Bloomfield Avenue says someone walked into her boutique and stole three designer handbags worth $500.

Though non-violent crimes have increased in Montclair during the past two years, overall crime in Essex County is down for the second year in a row.
