A bomb threat at the Ho-Ho-Kus police station led to evacuations and road closures late Wednesday night.
Ho-Ho-Kus police say Jonathan Edwards III came into the police station just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday carrying a backpack. He allegedly told the dispatcher that there was a bomb inside.
"He was calm and just dropped it and walked out," says Ho-Ho-Kus Police Chief Christopher Minchin.
Officers arrested Edwards and called in the Bergen County Bomb Squad. Nearby buildings, including the town fire department, were evacuated as a precaution.
Ho-Ho-Kus police operated from their command center at the Waldwick police station during the situation.
The backpack did not contain a bomb. Inside were dirty socks, batteries and headphones.
Edwards was charged with making terroristic threats and causing a false public alarm. He is also undergoing psychiatric evaluation at Bergen Regional Medical Center.
