Police: Man arrested for driving while impaired, fatally striking pedestrian in Coram

Suffolk police say a 25-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he fatally struck a man who had fallen out of his wheelchair while trying to cross a busy roadway in Coram.
Raymond Hubbard, 33, was lying in the roadway in front of 541 Middle Country Road Saturday after 10 p.m. when he was hit by a 2003 Chevy Suburban. Police say the driver, Centereach's Nicholas Doxtader, was impaired at the time of the incident.
Hubbard was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
Prosecutors told the court that Doxtader admitted to police at the scene that he had taken five hits of marijuana when he got behind the wheel. Doxtader was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.
Doxtader apologized to Hubbard's family.
"I'm very sorry. I'm very sorry," he said.
Coram resident, John Gedde says he saw the victim just before the fatal accident.
"I should have stopped and helped him out. I saw him going up the hill struggling in his wheelchair," Gedde explained.
Doxtader pleaded not guilty to driving while ability impaired by drugs. He is due back in court on Feb. 29.
