Police in Dunellen are warning residents about an increase in catalytic converter thefts from vehicles parked in the borough and surrounding areas.

Police say the thefts are part of a regional trend and that catalytic converters are often targeted for the precious metals they contain. Authorities say the parts can be stolen within minutes, leaving vehicle owners with costly repairs.

Residents are urged to be alert for suspicious activity, especially overnight. Police say signs may include the sound of power tools, such as grinding or cutting noises, voices near parked vehicles, idling cars or someone looking under a vehicle at an unusual time.

Police say anyone who sees a theft in progress should call 911 and provide as much detail as possible, including descriptions of people or vehicles involved. Residents are urged not to approach anyone suspected of tampering with a vehicle.

Police also recommend parking in well-lit areas, using a garage when available, installing motion-sensor lights and considering anti-theft devices.
