Police in Ocean County say that illegal fireworks are likely to blame for a fire along the Manasquan Inlet Tuesday night.
Officials say that someone set off the illegal fireworks minutes after the professional show ended at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach.
“We heard this ‘bang, bang, bang,’ and we thought it was kids probably throwing off fireworks from the jetty,” says resident Katheryn Pramuk.
Fire crews were able to put the blaze out minutes after it started.
“We had just seen a beautiful half-hour display of fireworks. It seems excessive to have some more minutes later,” Pramuk says.
Point Pleasant Beach Fire Chief Ira Waldman says that the fire is why people should leave fireworks displays to the professionals.
“Doing stuff like that puts everybody’s lives in danger. The people, the houses…certainly the firefighters,” Waldman says. “That’s what we do. It’s not a problem for us, but definitely the residents are our main concern.”
Police say that one adult was arrested for allegedly possessing illegal fireworks and that more charges are possible as the investigation continues.
