Police are accusing an election worker of being on heroin while monitoring Tuesday's polls.

Officials say Sean Colligan, 30, was exhibiting odd behavior while working at a polling station inside Schuyler-Colfax Middle School in Wayne.

Colligan was seen shaking his head aggressively and nearly passing out.

He is accused of possessing and doing drugs on the school property while classes were in session, although police did not find drugs or paraphernalia when they searched the school.

Following the arrest, some people are calling for a change in how voting is handled at schools. The chairman of the Passaic County Board of Elections says he has been an advocate for schools being closed during all elections.

But others say it would be better to move polling places out of schools.

School board president Donald Pavlak Jr. says there are plenty other places in Wayne, including municipal buildings, where voting can occur.

He also hopes to institute background checks for workers.
