Police in Essex County are searching for the person who stole a car that had an 8-month-old baby inside.
The incident happened on Monday afternoon outside of a preschool on Scotland Road in Orange. It’s one of the busiest streets in the city.
Police found the Hyundai Elantra and the baby a few blocks away on Conover Terrace. The baby was not harmed.
It was unclear if the car was left running or if there was any struggle at the time of the incident.
A record number of cars were stolen in New Jersey last year. The state is on pace to break that record again. Authorities have been struggling to keep up.
Gov. Phil Murphy pushed for new legislation to help deal with the rise in auto crimes.
This is not the first time a car has been stolen with a child inside in recent months. A car was stolen with a 3-month-old inside in Newark last month. Earlier this year, a car was stolen in Tenafly with a child inside. Neither child was hurt in these cases.
