Police in Newark are searching for three people seen on surveillance video attacking a 64-year-old man who was walking his dog.
The attack happened around 5:45 a.m. Thursday. The video shows the victim standing at the intersection of Highland and Park avenues. Three men approach him, and one is seen punching the man in the head, knocking him unconscious.
The suspects then appear to go through the man’s pockets before the video ends.
The victim’s daughter tells News 12 that he suffered three fractured ribs, a punctured lung, fractures to his eye socket and nose and a deep cut inside his mouth.
“They did not take anything, absolutely nothing. His money, his cellphone, everything was still on him,” the daughter says. “Nothing was taken.”
The daughter says that the car the three suspects used before the attack was seen in two other surveillance videos possibly featuring all three attackers. She says that the car was reported stolen from Maplewood and was later found in South Orange.
The daughter says that she believes the attackers are young adults who were just out to cause trouble.
“It just seems like it’s for fun, but it’s not fun when you’re hurting older people – an innocent person trying to walk on the street,” she says. “They could have killed him.”
Anyone who may have information about the attack is asked to call Newark police.
