A committee that says it wants to stop Jersey City officials from moving the Polish Katyn memorial statue says it will keep trying after its petition failed its first round.
The Jersey City clerk found that 60 percent of the signatures submitted on the petition were not valid. The group now has 10 days to amend the petition with valid signatures.
The memorial is dedicated to the victims of the 1940 Katyn massacre in Poland and currently stands at Exchange Place in Jersey City. But the area is being redeveloped and Mayor Steven Fulop wants to move the statue elsewhere.
Fulop says he is glad that plans to move the statue can go forward.
“Glad the Katyn monument will have its own park near the 9/11 monument,” the mayor tweeted. “The statue was never legally designated for Exchange Place and its good we weren’t forced to move it two blocks back to where it was approved in 1989.”
Over 2,800 signatures are needed for the petition.
