Proposed bill aims to align spring break schedules across school districts

The legislation would allow the state to recommend a specific week for spring break, but it would not require districts to follow it.

A new bill in New Jersey could soon bring more consistency to school calendars by recommending a uniform spring break week across districts.

State Sen. Patrick Diegnan, who introduced the proposal, says the current system, where districts schedule spring break at different times, creates challenges for families.

“It really becomes an issue for parents where mom or dad teaches in one district and the kids are in another, and they’re not off at the same time,” Diegnan said.

The bill would allow the state to recommend a specific week for spring break, but it would not require districts to follow it.

The proposal is already drawing mixed reactions from parents.

Some, like Dana Cestone, say a standardized break could make travel more expensive, with more families planning vacations at the same time.

“Everybody would be leaving town on the same day, and the price of flights and hotels would skyrocket,” she said.

Others say a more consistent school calendar would make it easier to plan time off and childcare.

“If they all get a break, then the whole family does something together,” one parent said.

Supporters argue the change could reduce stress and make scheduling simpler for families across the state.

Lawmakers hope to pass the bill by June 30, which could allow the changes to take effect as soon as next spring.
