Just one day after an Ocean County town announced a crackdown to eliminate deadly pedestrian accidents, a person was struck and killed while crossing a street.
Police said a pedestrian was struck and killed around 5 p.m. Tuesday while crossing the southbound lanes of Shorrock Street, about half a mile from Route 70, on the border of Lakewood and Brick.
Lakewood police confirmed that the incident was not a hit-and-run and that the driver was cooperating with the investigation. No additional information was immediately released about the victim or driver.
Prior to Tuesday, there had been 13 fatal accidents and numerous serious accidents in the township in 2017.
The Ocean County prosecutor on Monday announced police will be deployed at various intersections throughout Lakewood to strictly enforce motor vehicle laws in order to prevent crashes.
The stepped up enforcement will begin on Thursday.
