A person has been taken into custody following unfounded reports of an active shooter at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst on Tuesday morning that prompted a temporary lockdown, according to U.S. Attorney Alina Habba.

Officials at the military installation said that the base’s emergency protocols were put into place and staff began investigating the reports.

Habba says that the person taken into custody is a civilian employee of the federal government who conveyed false information about an active shooter.

“This kind of senseless fear-mongering and disruption will not be tolerated in my state,” Habba wrote on X.

The lockdown went into effect just before 11 a.m. All personnel who were outdoors were ordered to take cover while the alleged threat was investigated.

Officials later confirmed that no active shooter was found, and the base resumed normal operations just before 12 p.m.

“After everything this country has gone through, especially in light of current events, I will be sure to bring down the hammer of the law for anyone found guilty of creating unnecessary panic and undermining public trust,” Habba wrote.

Details about the person taken into custody were not provided.
