Law enforcement officers serving a warrant in Newark encountered gunfire Thursday morning, leading to a standoff, according to authorities.
The acting Essex County prosecutor said in a news release that that detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office were executing a warrant around 6 a.m. on Clinton Place in the City of Newark, with assistance from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office entry team.
According to a preliminary investigation, someone inside the residence fired shots at law enforcement. That resulted in a standoff that was still ongoing hours later, according to the prosecutor.
No injuries have been reported.
No one was taken into custody at the multifamily structure, though "some residents were detained for identification and subsequently released," the prosecutor said.
Some neighbors were asked to evacuate as a precaution.
Further details were not immediately available.
