A partial roof collapse at a Bloomfield apartment building caused an evacuation of the entire building.
The collapse was reported at 27 Park Place on Friday. One resident was taken to the hospital for back pain. No other injuries were reported.
Bloomfield officials say the collapse was due to water damage and impacted one apartment unit directly. But water leaked throughout the building and into multiple units.
“My heart goes out to every resident impacted by this incident,” Bloomfield Mayor Jenny Mundell wrote in a statement. “The Township has directed all available resources to the scene and I personally went to meet with residents to make sure their immediate needs were addressed.”
A temporary shelter was set up at the Bloomfield Civic Center. The American Red Cross and Bloomfield Human Services are coordinating housing accommodations for residents, with support from Bloomfield College of Montclair State University.
The Bloomfield Office of Emergency Management is also working to give clothing to those displaced, as well as assistance to residents with special needs.
