Jersey City may soon lose the services of one of its community hospitals.
The owner of Greenville Hospital, Liberty Health Care, says the facility is losing money. According to Liberty Health Care, the hospital loses more than $3 million a year and half of its 100 beds are typically empty.
Liberty Health Care also says 80 percent of patients from the Greenville section are choosing other hospitals that are newer and offer different specialties. Liberty Health Care wants to eventually turn Greenville Hospital into a psychiatric and addiction hospital.
Several doctors are fighting to keep Greenville open. They met with the commissioner of health in Trenton Monday.
State officials will ultimately decide the fate of Greenville Hospital. The decision is expected to be made in six to nine months.
