U.S. Olympic gold medalist and New Jersey native Laurie Hernandez visited a Newark school Wednesday to discuss the importance of reading.
Hernandez, who is an author herself, went to Lafayette Street School to talk to second- and third-graders. She spoke to the children about her Olympic experiences and competing on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Hernandez told News 12 New Jersey that she hopes to return to the Olympics in 2020.
“That’s definitely the hope. I’ve started training here and there, and it’s hard because I’ve been traveling a lot and I like to work with kids. I’m trying to balance both. We are taking it easy, but I’ve started moving a little bit,” she said.
During her visit, Hernandez read with students and distributed books to the school in partnership with KPMG.
