Officials have a warning for residents and pet owners in Summit after a raccoon tested positive for rabies.

The animal was found in the area of Russell Place.

According to the Westfield Regional Health Department, anyone who may have been in contact with a raccoon between Jan. 6. and Jan. 13 should speak to a doctor.

The health department says pet owners should also have their animals vaccinated against rabies.

Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus, which is found in the saliva of a rabid animal and is transmitted by a bite, or possibly by saliva of an open cut or the eyes.
