A multialarm fire in Garfield that displaced more than two dozen people does not appear to be suspicious, officials said Monday.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office says the fire at 568 Palisade Ave. started in a shed behind the home. The call came in just after 12:15 p.m. Sunday. That shed fire then spread to several nearby homes.
Officials reported that several people were treated for minor injuries. They say that a Hackensack firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. He was treated and released Sunday night.
The American Red Cross said it was helping 29 people from nine families who were impacted by the fire. The agency said it expected to help four additional families that were not home at the time of the fire.
Fire officials say that the buildings are still inhabitable for the most part.
“There’s a lot of smoke and water damage,” Assistant Chief E.J. Morano told News 12 on Sunday.
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
