The New York City Department of Design and Construction hopes to have a new plaza ready for Bronx residents to enjoy next fall.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg joined community leaders Wednesday to break ground on what will be the new Fordham Plaza.
The current plaza is a major transit hub in the Bronx, surrounded by a number of bus lines, Metro-North, schools and stores.
Officials say that not only will the space be transformed with rerouted bus lines, new stores, plants, kiosks for vendors and a large canopy, but businesses in the area say they are excited about the possibility of making bigger profits.
