New Jersey health officials say that a 19th case of adenovirus has been linked to a rehabilitation facility where seven people have already died.
A statement said that the person already felt ill, so the diagnosis doesn’t necessarily mean that the virus is still spreading.
State health officials say that the outbreak at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation won’t be declared over until the facility can go four weeks without any new cases.
Seven people, ranging in age from toddler to young adult, have died this month from the virus. Health officials say that most of them previously had underlying health conditions and suppressed immunities.
The health center was previously cited for some health deficiencies including inadequate handwashing.
Adenoviruses are common and typically cause mild cold or flu symptoms in otherwise healthy people, including sore throats, fever, coughs and sneezes. Some strains also cause diarrhea and or pinkeye.
