What started as a response to a 911 call ended up turning into a basketball challenge – kids versus patrol officers.
Pompton Lakes police say they received a 911 call Saturday regarding teenagers who were being rowdy and possibly drunk over at the Lakeside Middle School.
Sgt. Joseph Ruffo says he was on patrol at time with officers Ed Bartlett and John LoGreco.
"They were trying to start a pick-up game, and they were trying to get a five-on-five game going,” says Ruffo. "They didn't have enough kids at the time."
The officers couldn’t refuse when the teens challenged them to a game, so they split up and joined in.
News 12 is told that coincidentally, that same afternoon, two other officers stopped by the soccer field to play with a bunch of kids.
"It makes them realize too that you're a human being as well,” says Sgt. Stephen Kouefati. “I'm also part of the community. I grew up here."
Police say they enjoyed playing and are proud to say that the department does well working toward a positive relationship with school kids in Pompton Lakes.
