President Barack Obama called for a new era in U.S.-Islam relations in his address to the Muslim world Thursday, but some local activists say the president needs to go even further.
Obama's speech, a sweeping call for mutual respect between members of the religion and the United States, has been widely praised throughout the Muslim world. James Sues, a local Muslim-American activist, says the president's speech is only a step in the right direction.
"[Muslim-Americans] would frankly like to see a bit more outreach to this community," says Sues. "These organizations are very interested in reaching out to the administration ? making our views known and having these views incorporated into policy."
New Jersey is home to more than 100 mosques and an estimated 500,000 Muslim-Americans.
