North Haledon has a new secret weapon to ensure its residents are recycling.
Mitch Hanenian was hired in January to be North Haledon's first recycling enforcement officer. Hanenian also serves as code enforcement for the borough of Haledon.
As recycling czar, Hanenian says he was hired not a moment too soon. He has made education his mission, going door to door explaining recycling rules.
"Many people are unaware what to do with their recyclables," he says. "We're not looking to punish. We're here primarily to educate the people."
Hanenian can write warnings and issue summons for fines and court appearances, however, if residents refuse to recycle.
The recycling czar says what people don't understand is recycling helps taxpayers as much as the environment by lowering trash bills for the borough and thereby lowering taxes.
