Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) signed a bill Wednesday giving $270 million to build stem cell research facilities.
Money from the bill will go toward a combination of building new facilities and funding programs already in place for both adult and embryonic stem cell research. The main research center is planned for New Brunswick. Another is planned to be part of the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. Once the facilities are built, stem cell researchers will start working on finding cures for all kinds of diseases and spinal injuries.
Many say the new law gives them hope for a cure. However, skeptics say a stronger focus on embryonic research is giving families false hope. While this funding is aimed mostly at paying for the facilities, lawmakers plan to push for more money aimed specifically at research next year.
