New Jersey's transportation commissioner plans to resign this month.
Jamie Fox announced his intent to resign on Friday, saying he will return to the private sector.
Fox was part of a tangled web surrounding an aborted United Airlines effort to fly to Atlantic City's airport. The public agency headed by Fox, a former United lobbyist, did not require the airline to repay $104,000 despite a contract calling for it.
United's actions at Newark Liberty International Airport have also been part of an investigation dealing with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The connections among the airline, transportation officials and the Port Authority are part of an ongoing federal investigation that began when Gov. Chris Christie appointees purposely created a traffic jam on approach lanes to the George Washington Bridge.
