The first big holiday travel day of the season officially starts next Wednesday, but some people got a head start Friday.
Some travelers made plans early this year to beat the rush, and New Jersey Transit was one step ahead of them with extra service already in place. NJ Transit has also added six trains to get to Newark Liberty International Airport.
Friday also marked New York?s first gridlock alert day of the holiday season. Those are the days the city urges travelers to use mass transit into Manhattan. To prepare for the massive amounts of people using the trains, NJ Transit has added extra service into the city.
Experts say in New Jersey alone, 374,000 people will drive during the Thanksgiving holiday. Approximately 122,000 residents will take flights and 26,000 will use NJ Transit.
