New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster was killed in the line of duty on this day back on May 2, 1973.
Foerster was providing back-up for a routine traffic stop when gunfire was erupted. He died from multiple shots to the chest.
One of the suspects died in the shooting. The other, Joanne Chesimard, was convicted of first degree murder, but escaped in 1980 and was granted asylum in Cuba.
She remains on the FBI's Most Wanted List.
