Swine flu has claimed its first New Jersey victim.
Health officials say a 49-year-old Essex County man died Saturday from the H1N1 virus.
The man reported flu-like symptoms on May 30. He was hospitalized at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair on June 2 with pneumonia.
Health officials say the man had "many" underlying health conditions, but will not clarify what they were. There are now 320 confirmed swine flu cases and 194 probable cases in 19 counties in New Jersey.
It is not known if the man spread swine flu to others, but health officials believe they're in the clear so far.
"Our state health department has been working really closely with the local health department as well as the hospital to identify the individuals who might have come into contact with this individual when he was ill," says Heather Howard, commissioner of New Jersey Health and Senior Services. "Fortunately, we've identified his contacts and fortunately we haven't identified anyone who has become ill."
