High school football teams across New Jersey are paying tribute to a Warren Hills Regional player who died last week after being injured.
Quarterback Evan Murray died Sept. 25 after getting tackled during a game. According to an autopsy, Murray died of massive internal bleeding from a laceration in his spleen.
On Friday, players at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark wore decals on their helmets with Murray's number 18. A running back from Phillipsburg tweeted that his next touchdown would be in honor of Murray. In Somerville, everyone wore blue, Warren Hills Regional's color. Many other teams honored Murray in their own ways.
Many people in the state were affected by Murray's death. Singer Jon Bon Jovi posted a video offering his condolences and even saying he would put a No. 18 sticker on his guitar Friday before his concert in the United Arab Emirates. Gov. Chris Christie commented on the death as well.
Murray's funeral was held Thursday. His friends have been raising money for a scholarship in his name.
Warren Hills Regional was scheduled to have a game Saturday, but postponed it. School officials say that the students are just not ready to play.
