Rep. Chris Smith is in South America Thursday in an attempt to help a Tinton Falls man who's locked in an international custody battle.
David Goldman says in 2004 his wife, Bruna, took his then 4-year-old son Sean on what he thought was a two-week vacation to Brazil. Goldman says once Bruna arrived in Brazil she called him to tell him their marriage was over and that she was keeping their son. Bruna married another man in Brazil and died giving birth to another child last year.
Goldman has not been able to see his son since. He has flown to the country several times in an attempt see his son and eventually bring him home.
Both Rep. Smith and Goldman plan to meet with the Brazilian Supreme Court Friday. According to Rep. Smith, not returning custody to Goldman is a violation of an international treaty. Rep. Smith has also asked Congress to pass a resolution to pressure Brazil to return Sean to his father.
