? A New Jersey assemblyman?s proposal for a driving privilege card for illegal immigrants is drawing criticism.

Assemblyman Joseph Vas (D-19th District) says his bill would only allow undocumented immigrants to drive legally. Vas, who is also the mayor of Perth Amboy, says the card would keep all drivers safe because illegal immigrants would pass a road test and have insurance. The assemblyman argues that it?s hypocritical to allow illegal immigrants to work in the United States, but not allow them to drive to work. Insurance agencies and some New Jersey residents are backing the proposal, but others fear it would compromise security.

Vas counters that the licenses would give the Motor Vehicle Commission information about the state?s estimated 350,000 undocumented immigrants. Still, the assemblyman says he cannot promise that licensed immigrants would not be deported.
