The mayor of Newton says “hell no” to calls for him to resign following controversy over posts he shared on Facebook.

The Newton Town Council censured Mayor Wayne Levante during a public meeting Monday and also voted 4-1 for a no-confidence motion.

The mayor came under fire after he reportedly shared a conspiracy theory post on Facebook calling Stoneman-Douglas High School shooting survivor and gun control advocate David Hogg a “crisis actor.” Florida school officials have confirmed that Hogg, 17, is a student at the school, debunking most of the theories.

Levante shared the post from a pro-President Donald Trump Facebook page along with the caption “No matter what side you are on regarding the gun control issue…the corporate media is playing us.”

Some Newton residents took issue with what the mayor said online and showed up at Monday’s meeting to confront him.

“You keep making claims about fake and bias news, but did you even look into the conspiracy theory you passed along? It was quickly debunked. I find it incredibly hypocritical that you cry biased news and say you don’t trust it and then you go on to share a conspiracy,” one Newton High School student said during the public comment portion of the meeting.

But other residents were glad that the mayor chose not to step down and there was the sound of applause when Levante refused to resign.

Levante said on Facebook Monday night that he wanted to “sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by the post that has created some of the recent drama.” But he also said that he was hurt by some of the treatment he received due to the post.
