Pools, beaches and water parks are always fun during the summer, but it's important to be cautious when heading to these destinations.
Parents should consider getting swimming lessons for young children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, formal swimming lessons can dramatically reduce the risk of drowning among children 1 to 4 years of age.
It's also important that parents keep an eye on their kids while swimming, since drowings can occur very quickly and quietly. Small children should wear a life jacket at all times, even if they know how to swim.
Parents are advised to take a CPR class for life-saving techniques.
A fence and alarm system should be installed for those who have backyard pools. Clearing the pool area of toys and floats is important so children won't be attracted to walk near the pool area.
