The Newark Police Department swore in 121 new police officers Friday, the largest class in 22 years.
The ceremony was held at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
Hundreds of friends and loved ones of the new officers gathered to see them take the oath.
“I’m really really proud of him. As you can see I am wearing a shirt that says ‘My husband’s an officer,’” says Lucy Fayiah. “I love him and am proud of him.”
This was the first time that the police recruits were trained at the New Jersey State Police Academy in Sea Girt. It was part of a partnership with the state.
This year’s class was the second largest in Newark’s history.
