Newark students wear hoodies in support of slain FL teen
Hundreds of students in Newark showed their support today for a teen fatally shot by a neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, Fla.
Students at Newark's Rafael Hernandez School asked the faculty for permission to wear hoodies to school. They wanted to show support for Trayvon Martin, who was wearing one when he was killed last month.
Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in self-defense. The teen was unarmed at the time. Zimmerman has not been charged in Martin's death.
The school normally does not permit students to wear hooded sweatshirts, but the faculty agreed to waive the policy for one day to teach students about peaceful protests.
