Newark residents say the city's sanitation department is letting garbage pile up on the streets.
Newark District Leader Steve Sacco says Saturday marked the first garbage pick up in almost two weeks. According to Sacco, the garbage collection happened shortly before News 12 New Jersey arrived on the scene. Sacco believes sanitation officials were tipped off that News 12 New Jersey would be filming and made the unscheduled collection.
Rotting debris, however, could still be found on the sidewalks. Residents say the abundance of trash is becoming a haven for rats.
When reached for comment, the Department of Sanitation said no supervisor was available to talk.
