The chief of the Newark Police Department is set to retire after 26 years on the force.
Chief Darnell Henry was appointed to the position in 2016. Previously. he served as the head of Mayor Ras Baraka’s security detail.
“Under the leadership of Chief Henry, we have enjoyed a significant reduction in both crime and complaints against the police, while creating a department that demographically looks like the community it serves,” Baraka said in a statement.
Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose will serve as both director and interim chief until a replacement is found.
Henry will retire on Sept. 30.
