Police say a man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a police-involved shooting.
The shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. Police Director Garry McCarthy says a mentally disturbed man, Franciso Martes, had a simmering dispute with the owner of a store at 52 Broadway that turned violent.
Police say Martes attacked the store owner with a knife, cutting his arm. The victim then called police.
McCarthy says a police sergeant and an officer responded. A confrontation then ensued between the officer and Martes, leading the officer to fire at least five shots, killing him.
"There's got to be another way that we can do something here. ? In New Jersey, we're not allowed to have Tasers and I don't know if that would have made a difference in this particular incident," McCarthy says. "But you know what, we've got to get to work on that."
Merchants along Broadway say they were told to stay inside their establishments while Newark police investigated the shooting.
