The City of Newark partnered with local organizations and nonprofits to host a free holiday brunch for residents and people experiencing homelessness, offering meals, groceries and access to city services. The event was held at the Vince Lombardi Center of Hope and featured food, holiday activities and visits from Santa, giving families and individuals a safe place to gather during the holiday season. “We invited the whole community to be here and enjoy a warm meal, groceries from Goya to take for the holiday season, and take pictures with Santa,” said Jacqueline Mercado-Quiles, deputy mayor of community engagement. Organizers said the brunches are meant to provide more than food, especially at a time when some residents feel unsafe or isolated. In addition to meals, attendees were able to learn about city programs and services. Representatives shared information about the Newark ID program and health insurance options. The Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services played a key role in connecting people to help. “Our teams are canvassing our communities and looking for individuals that are in need of food and resources,” said Luis Ulerio, director of the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services. “Today, we engaged our shelters and folks on the street. We’re really happy with the turnout and hoping to do more of this.” The meals were provided by a local church. This was the second free brunch hosted this month. City leaders and organizers said they plan to continue the effort.
