An 82-year-old West Caldwell man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian in January, authorities said.
Angelo Lotrecchiano is charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and endangering an injured victim, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police from the Caldwell Police Department responded around 6:30 p.m. Jan. 16 to Bloomfield Avenue after receiving a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, officials said.
Officers found 56-year-old Sharon Thomas, of Caldwell, unconscious in the road. She was taken to Mountainside Medical Center and pronounced dead.
Witnesses told police Thomas had just exited a NJ Transit bus and was crossing Bloomfield Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by Lotrecchiano. Authorities said Lotrecchiano stopped and got out of the vehicle before returning to it and leaving the scene.
A second vehicle also struck Thomas while she was in the roadway, but that driver remained at the scene, officials said.
