Although many non-profits and churches are scrambling for donations amid the financial crisis, the Beulah Baptist Church of Newark was able to feed 400 families Saturday.
Pastor Gerard Dickson started organizing the food drive this past spring. He received donations from Feed the Children and assembled 65 volunteers.
"Each family received food, toiletries and enough water for one week," Dickson says. "With prices skyrocketing at the grocery stores, many say this donation helps."
With hunger increasing across New Jersey and donations at an all-time low, many residents are concerned about the future of food drives.
Church representatives say they hope a holiday food drive will be possible, but they know it will be a challenge to collect donations.
